A gorgeous, heartfelt debut whose reflex-check combat asks parries to carry more than they should.

Expedition 33 deserves every headline about its audacity: a debut studio of around thirty core developers shipping a UE5 RPG with this art direction, the Paintress's monolith counting down ages, Belle Epoque ruins drowned in impossible flora, and an orchestral score that does serious emotional lifting. Gustave, Maelle, and the doomed-expedition premise deliver real grief and a first-act turn that resets the whole story's stakes; the A grades are earned.
The B overall is where this review breaks from the chorus. The combat's signature, turn-based menus interrupted by real-time parry and dodge checks, is exhilarating for ten hours and exhausting for forty, because enemy damage scales until perfect parries stop being a flourish and become the whole game; a missed timing window undoes minutes of planning. Pair that with wobbly platforming, a camera that fights interiors, and late-game balance that funnels every build toward the same few broken combos, and the masterpiece consensus softens into a very good, very promising B.
