The Gulag is the smartest thing anyone has added to a battle royale, and the cheating problem is the reason people stopped caring.

Battle royale's structural flaw was always that dying early meant twenty minutes of nothing. Warzone's answer was a prison shower block where your first death drops you into a one on one gunfight for the right to redeploy, and it is such a good idea that the rest of the genre spent years working out how to copy it without admitting to it. Around that sits the best moment to moment shooting in the format, because the series has been refining aim down sights for fifteen years, plus buy stations that let a squad spend cash reviving a teammate, and a Verdansk map with enough vertical landmarks to make callouts meaningful.
Launching free and cross platform put it everywhere at once in a spring when everyone was indoors. The rot came from elsewhere: cheating on PC reached a level where lobbies were routinely compromised, and the anti cheat response took over a year. Add an install size that ate hundreds of gigabytes and a habit of stacking cosmetic bundles over fixes, and a landmark shooter wore its audience out.
