The multiplayer peak the series has chased ever since, attached to a campaign running on pure adrenaline.

Modern Warfare 2 is the entry the franchise has been trying to re-bottle for fifteen years, and the reason is the multiplayer. The map pool, Terminal, Highrise, Favela, Rust, is the strongest ever shipped in one box, the loadout sandbox reached its chaotic peak with riot shields, akimbo secondaries, and tactical nukes, and the moment-to-moment gunfeel hit a snappiness the series arguably never bettered. Spec Ops added a co-op greatest-hits reel besides.
The campaign is a different conversation: individually staggering set pieces, the White House flare-out, the Gulag, No Russian's still-debated provocation, strung on a plot whose twists collapse under a second's scrutiny, which is why story holds at B while everything else runs hot. Underneath it all is craft, an engine tuned to read instantly at speed and level design that taught a decade of designers flow and sightlines. Incoherent as fiction, immaculate as a machine, and the machine is what you keep playing.
