The most disliked reveal in the series hides the best written campaign it had shipped in years.

The reveal became a punchline before anybody had played a minute of it, and the backlash was about fatigue with the future rather than anything on the disc. What actually shipped is the strongest campaign the studio had assembled since the original Modern Warfare. Reyes commands a ship, picks missions from a bridge rather than a menu, flies a fighter that handles well enough to carry its own sequences, and loses people permanently in ways the script has the discipline not to oversell.
The villain appears in a handful of scenes and does more with less than the series usually manages. The zero-gravity boarding actions genuinely work, reorienting your sense of up while keeping the gunplay legible. Multiplayer is competent and was largely abandoned as players went back to the remastered Modern Warfare bundled alongside it, which is the cruelest verdict any of these games has received. The future setting had run out of goodwill and this took the hit for all of it. Play the campaign. It is the one nobody gave a fair hearing.
