Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Review

A co-op-first campaign gamble that misfires, leaving competent multiplayer to carry a confused package.

Black Ops 7's defining decision was building the campaign co-op-first, and it is the decision the whole grade hangs on. Missions balanced for four operators play as bullet-sponge arenas when tackled solo, the psychological-thriller framing, hallucination set pieces chasing the series' Numbers-station legacy, keeps dissolving into wave defenses, and the Black Ops tradition of tight, twisty single-player storytelling simply is not here; that is what a D in story means in a franchise that once did interrogation-room unreliable narrators.

Multiplayer is sturdier: omnimovement remains a genuinely good chassis, the launch map pool is decently varied, and Zombies delivers its round-based comfort food with confidence. But sturdiness is not direction. Sandwiched between stronger neighbors and asking premium pricing for a campaign many players treated as skippable, it lands as the series' clearest recent case of ambition pointed at the wrong target. The C is not for laziness, it is for a big swing taken at the wrong pitch.
