The boldest setting choice in shooter history, rendered with the best audiovisual craft DICE ever mustered.

Choosing World War I for a mainstream shooter was commercial madness that turned out to be creative genius. Battlefield 1's Frostbite showcase remains staggering: rain-slicked Amiens streets, the Sinai sandstorm rolling in mid-firefight, zeppelins burning out of the sky onto the map below. The audio design, all shrieking whistles and distant artillery, does as much work as the renderer, which is why visuals get the S. Operations mode is the mechanical peak, chaining maps into a push-and-pull frontline narrative that gave 64-player chaos actual dramatic shape.
The War Stories anthology campaign is uneven but its best chapters treat the setting with surprising restraint. Points off for weapon variety, inherently thin for the period and padded with prototypes, and for a behemoth system that is more spectacle than balance. But as a complete sensory argument for what large-scale multiplayer can feel like, DICE never topped it.
