The series' most joyful sprawl: a gorgeous Greece and a star turn from Kassandra, if you forgive the padding.

Odyssey is the moment Assassin's Creed stopped apologizing for becoming an RPG and simply committed. Its ancient Greece is one of the great virtual places: Kephallonia's scrubby coasts, the marble of Athens, storms rolling over the Aegean while your ship's crew sings. Kassandra is the franchise's best lead by a distance, warm and wry where the series usually manages brooding, and the mercenary system generates escalating nemeses out of your own sloppiness.
Naval combat returns at full Black Flag strength, and the ability wheel, Spartan kick foremost, finally makes combat expressive. The B in story reflects structure rather than character: three plot strands that never quite braid, and a cult-clearing checklist standing in for a final act. Level-gated regions also nudge players toward either grinding or the storefront, an ugly note in a hundred-hour game. But as a place to simply exist in, few open worlds are this generous.
