Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Review
2013Ubisoft MontrealGame
The pirate game that happened to have an Assassin's Creed strapped to it, and it is far better for the accident.

Ubisoft Montreal built a Caribbean you can sail across without a loading screen, board a frigate in the middle of, then walk inland to plunder, and that single continuity is why this entry outlived the ones on either side of it. The Jackdaw is the actual protagonist. Upgrading her hull, chasing legendary ships through squalls, and hearing the crew start a shanty during a long crossing gives the game a rhythm the series never found on land.
Edward Kenway helps, because a greedy privateer who does not care about ancient orders fits this sandbox far better than another reluctant chosen one, though the modern day framing remains a tax everybody pays. The stealth missions are still the old tailing and eavesdropping, stiff and over scripted, and they are the weakest hour of any session. But the sea, the weather system and the water rendering were genuinely ahead of their moment, and the whole thing runs across two console generations without visibly straining. A franchise entry that escaped its franchise.
