The template sequel: fix everything, add a great protagonist, set it in Renaissance Italy.

Assassin's Creed II is the industry's canonical example of a sequel diagnosing its predecessor correctly. Where Altair had nine identical assignments, Ezio gets a lifetime: the Auditore executions open a revenge story that spans decades, and mission design finally varies, carnival infiltrations, tomb platforming, a flight over Venice in da Vinci's glider. Renaissance Italy was an inspired trade for the Holy Land, giving the parkour system domes, canals, and frescoed interiors worth climbing, and the Monteriggioni villa added an economy loop that made exploration compound.
Ezio himself is the franchise's best creation, charming enough to carry two more games, and the Codex-page conspiracy plus that audacious vault ending gave the modern-day frame real momentum for the first time. The A across the board reflects consistency rather than compromise: combat is still counter-heavy and tailing missions still exist, which keeps the S out of reach, but nothing here is broken and almost everything is generous.
