Animal Crossing: New Horizons Review

The right game at the exact moment the world was locked indoors, and a genuine redesign underneath the timing.

The cultural moment is inseparable from the game and it should not be allowed to obscure what actually changed. Placing furniture outdoors, reshaping cliffs and rivers, and choosing where every villager's house sits turned decoration from an interior hobby into landscape design, and the results people produced went far past anything the series had permitted. Crafting gives the daily loop a reason to gather, and the real time clock still does the quiet work of making a session feel like a visit rather than a shift.
Nook Miles replaced an opaque progression with clear goals. The criticisms are legitimate. Crafting is repetitive because tools break constantly and the interface makes bulk work tedious, villager dialogue is thinner and less spiky than in earlier entries, and the content drip at launch left a lot of players idle within two months until later updates arrived. It is also entirely undemanding by design. As a place to spend a difficult year it was close to perfectly judged.
