Remedy stops apologising for being weird and delivers the most formally daring big-budget horror game in years.

Remedy has been rehearsing this for twenty years. The Dark Place is rendered with a path-traced lighting model that makes Manhattan-by-way-of-nightmare genuinely frightening, and the switch between Saga's Bright Falls procedural and Alan's collapsing manuscript gives the structure a rhythm most horror games cannot sustain past six hours. The plot board and the Writer's Room are the standout systems, converting exposition into an activity where you physically place evidence and rewrite scenes to reshape a level.
Herald of Darkness, a full musical number dropped into the middle of a survival horror game, should not work and is the best sequence Remedy has ever staged. The shooting is the weak link, deliberately clumsy in the survival horror tradition but simply unsatisfying against enemies that soak flashlight charge, and inventory management adds friction without tension. Buy it for the craft, the faces, the editing and the nerve, not for the combat.
