Shirahama draws magic as drawing: a spell is a figure inked inside a ring, and the rule that only witches may hold the pen is what gives the world its politics. The adaptation understands that, and Ayumu Watanabe's direction keeps the camera on hands and paper long enough for the craft to register. The production is the season's most beautiful, with backgrounds that hold the density of the page and spellcasting sequences that bloom in color instead of turning into light shows.
Coco is a good protagonist, eager and out of her depth, and the workshop around her, Qifrey's quiet evasions and the three older apprentices, gives the series a household worth returning to. The wonder is laid over something sadder, a story about a craft that hides its own history, and the show trusts a viewer to sit with that. The pace is unhurried and the wider conspiracy arrives late in the run. It is the clearest breakout of its year, and a second season is already coming.
