Wind Breaker Review
2024Anime
CloverWorks animate a street fight better than almost anyone, around a plot that barely exists.

The genre is old and the show knows it. A delinquent transfers in, wants to be the strongest, and discovers that the strongest are busy running errands for shopkeepers. The one structural idea in Wind Breaker is that Furin's fighters serve as the town's civic infrastructure, and it plays that straight, with grandmothers waving at boys covered in blood.
What lifts it is the fighting. CloverWorks stage the brawls with weight and clear geography. Contact lands with a delay, bodies get tired, a kick into a braced arm moves the man who threw it, and few shows this decade have animated fists connecting with such conviction. The second season keeps that standard and improves the night lighting.
The writing does not keep pace. Sakura's anxiety about being an outsider is resolved early and then repeated, opponents arrive with speeches about their own damage and are absorbed into the group within an episode, and the structure is a ladder with a sympathetic boss on every rung. Twenty five episodes over two seasons, both of them short. Netflix added the first season in March 2026 and the second a month later, and no third season has been announced. Worth the time for craft rather than for surprise.
