Vinland Saga Review
2019Anime
A revenge story that spends two seasons dismantling the appeal of revenge, and Askeladd is why it works.

The structural bet is enormous and it pays. Season one spends twenty-four episodes making the audience love Askeladd, so that when Thorfinn finally gets his duel the victory arrives as a catastrophe. Askeladd is the best-written character in modern anime, a pragmatist, a liar, and a secret Welsh loyalist whose final act reframes every scheme that came before it.
Then the series does something almost nothing adjacent to shonen would risk, and strands its protagonist on a farm for a season of slavery, stump clearing, and pacifism, with Einar as the counterweight and Canute mutating into something colder in parallel. Wit's first season is the more spectacular production, with weighty raids, snow, and mud rendered at real scale, while MAPPA's second is quieter and more restrained, which some of the fight work suffers for.
Yutaka Yamada's score and the first opening are excellent. The farmland arc's patience is a real endurance test that the second season does not always pass, which is why it grades well below the first. It is also the point: the slow season is what turns a revenge story into a reckoning with revenge, and that turn, on top of the first season's war, earns the series the top tier.
