The Seven Deadly Sins Review

2014Anime

A likeable cast stranded in a plot that resets its own stakes, and a production that visibly collapsed.

The premise is fine and the cast is genuinely charming, which makes the decline harder to excuse. Meliodas and Ban work as a comic double act, Escanor has one good gimmick, and the early recruitment structure gives the show a clean shape to follow. Everything after that is inflation. Power levels are printed as numbers and then ignored, characters die and return inside the same arc, and the Commandments arrive as an insurmountable threat before being cleared at a pace that empties the word.

Meliodas's curse lands as a retroactive explanation for a plot that had already lost its logic. The real failure is production. After the move to Studio Deen the drawing collapses, with off-model faces, missing in-between frames, flat compositing, and fights rendered as still images with motion lines pasted over them, and the fourth season is genuinely hard to sit through. Hiroyuki Sawano's score is far better than the show around it, and the recurring fanservice gag built on a child-bodied lead is a problem the series never drops.
