Spy x Family Review

2022Anime

A sitcom about a fake family, executed close to perfectly, and it is still a sitcom.

Anya carries it. The best running device the show has is that she can read the adults, cannot understand what she reads and then acts on the misunderstanding, which generates an inexhaustible supply of scenes where three people are having three different conversations. Loid and Yor are given just enough interior life to make the arrangement feel like it costs them something, and the writing is careful never to resolve that tension. The production is expensive and it shows in the comic acting rather than in the action, since the animators are drawing Anya's face for a living and they are extremely good at it.

Kenichiro Suehiro's brassy lounge score and the openings set the register exactly. The limit is structural. The espionage plot exists to justify the sitcom and barely advances across two seasons, the stakes reset every episode, and the school arc repeats its own beats without shame. It is warm, funny and very well made, and it is not going anywhere in particular, which is a fine thing to be as long as nobody pretends otherwise.
