Solo Leveling Review

2024Anime

One of the best-looking action shows in years, built around a protagonist who is never once in danger.

The production is not the problem. A-1's action direction is superb, with weighty impact frames, readable choreography, real camera movement through the dungeon spaces, and a shadow-army sequence that earns its scale, while Hiroyuki Sawano's score does what it always does and makes a corridor fight sound like a coronation. The writing underneath is a progression spreadsheet. Jinwoo levels up, gets stronger, wins, repeats, and because the system grants him power on a schedule rather than through choice, no fight carries a risk the audience believes in.

Supporting characters exist to register how impressive he is; his sister, his mother, and the hunter guilds are all reaction shots. The tone is joyless in a way the webtoon's pacing hid, since a weekly episode strips out the panel-turn thrill and leaves only the numbers going up. Antagonists are obstacles with no interiority whatsoever. It is a beautifully made object with nothing pushing back against its lead, and spectacle alone cannot carry a series this long.
