Two sisters move to the countryside and almost nothing happens, which turns out to be the achievement.

There is no antagonist here and barely a conflict. Two sisters move to a rural house while their mother is in hospital, they explore, they wait for a bus, and the largest event of the film is a small child wandering off. Building a feature on that is the risk, and what pays it off is the density of observed detail: the way Mei squats to stare at something, the racket a soot sprite makes, the specific business of a four year old carrying a bucket that is too big.
The animation does character work that dialogue never has to. Totoro himself appears for only a few minutes and the film is careful never to explain him, which is why he survives as an image rather than a mascot with rules. The mother's illness sits underneath everything without being stated as stakes, and the single scene where Satsuki breaks is enough because the previous hour earned it. Younger viewers take it as a friendly fantasy and older ones notice how much worry the sisters are quietly absorbing. Both readings are correct, and the film declines to choose between them.
