The best-animated television anime of its decade, arguing that psychic power is the least interesting thing about you.

Bones treats each episode as a director's showcase, and the result is a series with no single house style: paint-on-glass textures, pencil-line smears, sequences that change medium entirely mid-scene, and a percentage counter that turns emotional pressure into an explicit gauge. The Mogami arc and the season three climax sit among the most technically ambitious stretches of television animation the medium has produced. The thesis holds it together. Mob's power is treated as an accident of birth that grants him nothing he actually wants, and the show keeps insisting that effort, kindness, and a fitness club membership matter more than any of it.
Reigen is the best comic creation in modern shonen and, in the season two confrontation, its most uncomfortable, because the show makes the audience sit inside the fraud. What limits it is scale and consistency: the plotting is episodic and slight, several antagonist groups exist only to be cleared away, and the comic timing occasionally undercuts the drama it has just built. Astonishing craft on a modest story.
