Kaiju No. 8 Review
2024Anime
Production I.G make it look expensive, and the one fresh idea is a hero too old for the job.

The hook is good and it is used well for about three episodes. Kafka Hibino is thirty two, cleans up kaiju corpses for a living, and failed the Defense Force exam so many times that he stopped applying. Then a small creature flies into his mouth and he can turn into the thing he is paid to dispose of. A middle aged man getting one more attempt at the career he wanted is a premise almost no shonen bothers with, and the early episodes let it be sad as well as funny.
After that it becomes a competent unit show. Recruits are introduced with numbered combat readings, a superior officer turns out to be the strongest, a monster appears, the numbers go up. Production I.G supply excellent hardware design and clean, heavy fight choreography, and the western theme songs, Yungblud on the opening and OneRepublic on the ending, did as much for the show's profile abroad as any episode did.
Season two, eleven episodes across the summer of 2025, raises the stakes without changing the shape, and the manga it adapts finished in July of that year. A third and final season, announced at Jump Festa 2026, will adapt the manga's last arc. Easy to watch, hard to remember.
