2011Anime
The rare shonen that treats its power system as a legal document and its villains as philosophers.

Togashi's Nen system is the reason this adaptation outclasses its genre: every ability carries a stated cost, a declared condition, and a limitation the user cannot walk back, so fights resolve as arguments rather than escalations. Kurapika's chain jail vow, which will kill him if he misuses it, is the clearest case of a rule that makes tension out of arithmetic. Madhouse animates all 148 episodes with unusual discipline, keeping the palette flat and the compositing plain so the money lands on Hisoka's bungee gum, Netero's hundred-type prayer, and the Chimera Ant palace invasion, where the show slows to near real time and lets narration carry what images cannot.
That arc is the peak: Meruem and Komugi turn a war story into an argument about what a person is, and Gon's transformation is written as self-destruction rather than triumph. Yorknew is a heist thriller with almost no fighting in it. Yoshihisa Hirano's score, all harpsichord and choral menace, gives even a card game an oppressive weight. The unfinished ending is the only real cost.
