Grand Blue Review
2018Anime
A diving club comedy in which almost nobody dives, adapted with the volume turned up rather than down.

The premise is a bait and switch the show performs in its first ten minutes. Iori arrives at a coastal university to join a diving club and finds a room of naked upperclassmen and a crate of beer, and the sea barely features again. What follows is escalation comedy about student drinking, dares and public embarrassment, and the animation commits to it with facial distortion so extreme that it reads as a separate art style. That commitment is the difference between this and the many shows attempting the same register.
Zero-G's production is modest, the backgrounds are plain and the character animation is basic whenever nobody is screaming, but the timing on the reaction shots is sharp and the direction knows when to hold a still frame instead of moving it. It is repetitive. The plot cycles Iori through the same humiliation several times a season and the romantic subplot goes nowhere on purpose. Watch it for delivery rather than shape. When the escalation is working, few comedies of the last decade get louder laughs out of less material.
