Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Review
2023Anime
A fantasy series about the years after the quest, and it is patient enough to make that land.

The premise inverts the genre's clock. The demon king is dead in the first episode, Himmel dies in the second, and the series is about an elf realising that eighty years she treated as an errand were the most important years of someone else's life. It works because the flashbacks are placed with real discipline, arriving as small callbacks, a bottle of wine, a statue's pose, rather than as speeches. Fern and Stark are excellent additions, written with specific irritations and unstated affections, and the mage exam gives the show a conventional structure without abandoning its register.
Madhouse animates with restraint and unusual attention to acting, since the series lives on held expressions and small gestures, and the fight work, when it arrives, is clean and legible rather than showy. Evan Call's orchestral score is among the best of recent years. The exam arc is where it dips, introducing a large cast of one-note mages and slowing the pace the show had carefully earned.
