The appeal is legible and so is the problem. Fairy Tail is built on a guild as a found family, and Mashima writes that warmth well enough that the cast stays pleasant company across one hundred and seventy-five episodes in this series alone and three hundred and twenty-eight across all three. Natsu, Erza, Lucy and Gray are broad but consistent, and the guild hall scenes do more for the show than any of its arcs manage. The trouble is that escalation here is entirely emotional.

Fights resolve when somebody remembers their friends and stands back up, so the magic system carries no real constraints and the outcome of any battle is known from the first exchange. Deaths do not stick. Arc structure repeats with a new dark guild and a new ancient threat each time, and the middle series pads without mercy. The animation is mid-budget television with a handful of well-directed set pieces and long stretches of held frames. Yasuharu Takanashi's score is better than the material it serves. This is comfort viewing, and it is honest about being nothing more than that.
