Dragon Ball Z Review
1989Anime
The show that taught the world what a shonen fight looks like, at roughly twice the length it needs.

Toriyama's manga is a lean action comic, and Toei stretches it across seven years of weekly television, which is both why the show is famous and why it is exhausting. The complaints are fair. Goku and Frieza fight for over twenty episodes, whole weeks pass with characters powering up in place, and the drawing swings hard from one episode to the next depending on who is holding the pencil. The compensations are enormous. The Saiyan and Frieza arcs still work as escalating adventure, the Cell Games hand Gohan the best character arc in the franchise, and the transformations, the score, and the flat certainty of Toriyama's designs turn simple fights into events a generation can recite from memory.
It is also the template. Power levels, the tournament structure, the redeemed rival, the training arc that buys time: every shonen series since is arguing with Dragon Ball Z whether it admits it or not. The Buu arc is where the invention runs out and the comedy takes over. Watch it in manga order, or watch Kai if the pacing defeats you, but do not mistake the padding for a lack of craft underneath it.
