Dragon Ball GT Review
1996Anime
The Dragon Ball sequel with no manga underneath it, and the gap shows in almost every episode.

Toei runs out of manga and keeps producing, which is the whole story of this series. Toriyama contributes designs and a title and nothing else, so the writing falls to a staff that has to invent sixty four episodes of Dragon Ball without the author's instincts for pace or comedy. The opening stretch is the worst of it. Goku is turned back into a child for no reason the plot requires, the space adventure arcs are filler with a quest attached, and characters the previous series spent years building are parked or written out.
Gohan, Goten, and Vegeta all lose position so that Goku can be the only one who matters. There are real things here. Baby is a decent villain with a motive that connects back to the Saiyan history, Super Saiyan 4 is a striking design, and the final episode is genuinely moving in a way the rest of the run has not earned. The drawing is competent Toei television work, no worse than late Dragon Ball Z and occasionally better, with some strong layouts in the Shadow Dragon fights.
None of it adds up. The series is graded here as what it is, a long sequel that dilutes everything it inherits and that the franchise itself has quietly walked away from since. Watch the last twenty minutes and skip the rest.
