Delicious in Dungeon Review

2024Anime

A dungeon crawl where the party cooks the monsters, which turns out to be the best way anyone has found to make a fantasy world feel real.

The premise sounds like a single joke and is instead a method. Because Laios and his party cannot afford supplies, they cook what they kill, and each episode's monster meal becomes an excuse to think seriously about how a dungeon's ecosystem would actually work: what a walking mushroom is made of, why a mimic hides in a chest, what a dragon does with the things it eats. Kui's world building is the most rigorous in modern fantasy and Trigger's adaptation honours it, with food animation that is genuinely appetising and creature designs that are funny and plausible at once.

The party is a great one, Laios's monster enthusiasm balanced by Marcille's horror and Senshi's dwarven common sense. The story deepens across the season into something about hunger and desire that the comedy had been quietly setting up. The animation is solid rather than spectacular. It is the rare adaptation that understands why its source is good.
