Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Review
2022Anime
Trigger took a broken video game's setting and made the best thing to carry the Cyberpunk name.

Edgerunners arrived when Cyberpunk 2077 was a punchline and single handedly restored the property, which tells you how good it is. Trigger's animation is loud, saturated and constantly in motion, with a design sense that makes Night City feel dangerous in a way the game never quite managed, and the action sequences are among the studio's best. David's arc, from a kid with a stolen military implant to a man losing himself to chrome, is a tragedy with a clear shape and a foregone conclusion, and the show is honest that it is one.
Lucy is the series' emotional anchor and its best character. The pacing is breathless, which is a strength for ten episodes and would have been a problem at twenty, and the supporting crew are sketched more than drawn. The ending is devastating and correct. It is a rare licensed work that understands its source better than the source did.
