Chainsaw Man The Movie: Reze Arc Review
2025Anime
The film fixes what the series got wrong: Fujimoto's comic timing is back, and a small summer romance builds to the best action MAPPA has animated.

The series looked expensive and felt solemn; the film finds the rhythm. Tatsuya Yoshihara, promoted from action director to director, and character designer Kazutaka Sugiyama redrew the cast closer to Tatsuki Fujimoto's own line, and the first hour plays like a scrappy summer romance: a phone booth in the rain, a café, a night swim in an empty school pool, Denji trying to decide whether he likes Reze or Makima more. The jokes land because the cutting is quick again, and Reina Ueda makes Reze warm, funny and unreadable, which is exactly what the part needs.
Then the romance detonates, and the second half is one running battle across the city, with Denji riding the Shark Fiend Beam through a typhoon of debris. It is some of the strongest action MAPPA has animated, chaotic without losing its geography, and Kensuke Ushio's score and Kenshi Yonezu's theme, Iris Out, keep the energy absurd.
Critics agreed: 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, an A from Anime News Network, and /Film called it the best rom-com of 2025. It took 191.4 million dollars worldwide. The Makima prologue is a detour and the battle runs a little long, but this is the adaptation the manga deserved.
