Bleach Review
2004Anime
Peerless character design and fight staging attached to a plot that stops answering its own questions.

Kubo's gift is silhouette and reveal. Every shinigami carries a sword with a name, a release phrase, and a visual signature, so a fight becomes a sequence of introductions where each reveal reframes the odds. Soul Society is the peak of that method: thirteen captains established fast, then dismantled in duels with clear geography, and Aizen's betrayal reframes forty episodes of plot in a single shot. After that the machine grinds. The Arrancar arc keeps escalating without deepening, the Hueco Mundo stretch stalls on repeated one-on-ones, and the Fullbring detour reads as contractual.
Filler consumes most of two years. Animation swings hard between striking director-driven episodes and long static talk scenes with speed lines standing in for motion. What props the grade up is craft in the smaller units. Shiro Sagisu's score, all gospel choir and blues guitar, is among the medium's best, the opening sequences are consistently inventive, and Ichigo, Rukia, Byakuya, and Kenpachi stay legible even when the plot forgets what it wanted from them.
