Attack on Titan Review
2013Anime
A siege story that keeps widening its own frame until the walls are the least of it.

The first season's terror is mechanical: the titans move wrong, at a speed and scale the frame cannot contain, and the omni-directional mobility gear turns every fight into a problem of momentum and anchor points rather than an exchange of blows. Wit Studio's camera follows the cables, which is why those sequences still read as motion instead of chaos, and MAPPA's later seasons trade that kinetic charge for a heavier political register the story by then requires.
The real move is scope. It begins as survival horror about a wall and ends as an argument about inherited history, occupation and the uses of atrocity, and it keeps recontextualising earlier episodes rather than simply adding new ones. Hiroyuki Sawano's score is enormous and occasionally overwhelms a scene that wanted quiet. Characters are the weakest tier, since several exist mainly to deliver information and Eren's late turn asks the audience to take a great deal on trust. The Female Titan chase and Erwin's final charge remain among the best set pieces the medium has produced.
